On 21st November, 1914, the 2nd Royal Scots battalion of 8 Brigade, 3rd Division moved into trenches near Wulverghem, opposite Messines where they remained until 27th November. On 24th November, the day on which Frederick Rainbird was killed, the battalion diary recorded that there was sniper activity all day and that a shell landed in the farm where the battalion HQ was situated, wounding 5 men.
